How to Get Cat Urine Out of Carpet?

A lot of cat lovers i know ask me how to get cat urine out of carpet. The first time I stepped in a puddle of cat urine I was absolutely furious. I knew the litter box was clean, and I was positive my cat was properly trained, but for some reason they'd still urinated on the carpet. After getting over the initial disgust (and cleaning my shoe) I wasn't sure what to do.

Once pet urine saturates the carpet it is hard to get rid of the smell, or prevent a stain from setting. I knew I had to do something, and after a few false starts I was able to get the cat urine out of the carpet. If you are a cat owner who is dreading that first accident, learning how to get cat-urine out of carpet before an accident occurs will help you avoid a major stain and a lot of stress.

Cat

Blot the Area

After finding an area that has been urinated on by your cat, blot up any excess liquid immediately. If the liquid has a chance to seep through the carpet, it could reach the boards before creating another area for the smell and bacteria to grow. Drying the area as well as possible will reduce the chances of the urine reaching the floor boards or thoroughly saturating the carpet.

Neutralize the Odor

Once you have finished blotting, neutralize the odor with vinegar and water. Create a mixture of 50% vinegar and 50% water in a large glass or bowl. Pour the mixture over the area thoroughly saturating the area that has the most urine. The mixture will neutralize the odor, making it difficult for the cat to find the area and urinate on it again. If you do not work on neutralizing the odor, your cat might begin repeatedly "marking" the same location compounding the problem. The next step is important in how to get cat urine out of carpet.

Kill the Bacteria

Just because the worst of the odor is gone doesn't mean the bacteria isn't still there. The bacteria in cat urine will continue to thrive if not taken care of, and the bacteria can often smell worse the initial ammonia of cat urine. Use a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda to kill the bacteria before it has a chance to grow or spread. If you do not have baking soda, just use hydrogen peroxide to kill the bacteria.

Final Cleaning

When you are sure the majority of the odor and bacteria has been eliminated by the vinegar, water, and hydrogen peroxide; move on to a final thorough cleaning. Use a pet cleaning chemical on the affected area. Though many of these over the counter cat urine cleaners do not perform as well as advertised, once you have cleaned the area the chemicals in the spray will often repel your cat making them avoid the area in the future. Repelling a cat is one of the most important parts in cleaning cat urine out of carpet since it reduces the chances of a repeat performance in the same area.

Facts About Cats' Eating Behavior

Knowing what to feed your cat can make the difference between a healthy and happy cat, and one that is malnourished and hard to control. There are several misconceptions when it comes to feeding cats, what they like, and what they should eat. Here are some of the most basic facts about cats' eating behavior.

· Cats don't eat fruits and vegetables. There are many individuals who believe that cats eat the same things as human beings. This is not true; in fact feeding a cat fruits and vegetables can make a cat ill. Many people believe that wild cats roam the outdoors eating fruits and vegetable types of foods. This is a misconception as most wild cats eat meat, which is what your cat should mostly eat.

Cat

· Most cats need at least 140g of mouse per day. This measures out to be at least 5 mice a day that cats need in order to meet their caloric intake requirement.

· Cats are carnivores. Cats live and thrive mainly off of an exclusive animal diet and don't need the same kind of nutrients that we do.

· Many researchers believe that cats can distinguish between the four different tastes; sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. Cats do not have a great attraction to sweet tastes.

· For the most part, cats enjoy eating things like fish, meats, and other proteins. Sometimes they can exhibit strange eating behaviors such as eating plants or green leafy vegetables they find lying around. Eating plants and greens makes cats vomit which can help get rid of hair balls in their throat. They will naturally eat grass in the wild to help with digestion so don't be too surprised when they start munching on house plants. They're just trying to find a substitute for grass.

· The key to good cat food is its nutritional content which should mimic nutritional composition of a "natural" diet for cats. The term natural refers to anything that they can catch and feed themselves. While supplemental food is sometimes needed, the natural foods are best for the health and diet of your cat. Cat food can sometimes be considered natural and contain no artificial ingredients, but it's not really a "natural" food in the same sense of what cats eat in the wild.

· A wild cat will instinctively know what they want and like to eat, while a domesticated cat does not. They are so used to being around people and "people" food that they don't really act like cats are supposed to act. As the owner of a cat it is your job to show them what kinds of foods they should be eating by providing for them. When owners don't provide the appropriate foods for their cats, it can lead to malnutrition and unhealthy eating habits.

· Cats can lose their appetite just as easily as an adult can lose theirs, and for various reasons. Loss of appetite can be a symptom of illness or something else. It's important to know your own cat's eating behaviors so you can properly assess the situation. Some cats will eat their meals quickly and others will eat slowly and are more reluctant eaters.

These are just some general eating behaviors that can be seen in most cat breeds, however in order to really assess the eating habits of your cat you need to pay close attention to them every time they eat. Watch to see if they eat slow, or fast, or what kinds of foods they prefer. Do they eat mice or just hunt them? Are they chewing on plants around the house? Every little thing can make a difference when it comes to eating patterns so watch carefully.

Fortiflora Feline Supplement - Don't Buy Until You Read This!

When considering the pros and cons of various methods of treating gastrointestinal problems in your cat, don't overlook the power of probiotic supplements such as Purina FortiFlora for cats. The probiotics in FortiFlora work in two ways: they can help eliminate existing GI problems such as diarrhea, and they can prevent such problems from reoccurring. In fact, FortiFlora is a great choice for anyone who is looking for a solution to the problem of chronic and occasional diarrhea in their cat.

The live probiotic cultures that are present in FortiFlora introduce microorganisms into your pet's digestive tract that work to establish and maintain healthy amounts of intestinal microflora, the beneficial and naturally occurring organisms that are part of a cat's healthy and properly functioning digestive system. When the proper amounts of microflora are maintained, they can provide many benefits to the digestive health of your cat. Unfortunately, a natural and healthy balance can sometimes be quite difficult to maintain, and some cats require a probiotic supplement like FortiFlora Feline in order to keep healthy levels. There are many possible causes for microflora deficiencies and imbalances among which is the use of antibiotics to treat a separate illness. The end result of insufficient microflora levels can be chronic diarrhea or other gastrointestinal problems.

Cat

Anyone with a cat that is suffering from such a condition knows how important it is to find a way to restore proper microflora balance. Restoration of microflora balance is exactly what the probiotics in FortiFlora are designed to achieve. Aside from the obvious relief from suffering that comes from eliminating diarrhea, there are many other benefits to maintaining a healthy digestive system. In fact, the overall health of your cat is improved when the digestive system is in balance, and your cat's immune system will benefit as well. FortiFlora is safe and effective for cats of all ages and sizes, including kittens once they have been weaned.

In addition to the many health benefits of using Purina FortiFlora, it is also simple to administer. Doses are each individually packaged so that you don't have to worry about measuring out the correct amounts. To administer, simply mix the powder in with your cat's food once per day. The flavor is specially designed to be appetizing to cats, so getting them to actually ingest FortiFlora Feline should not be difficult. In fact, because each dose contains only one gram of FortiFlora, it is likely that your cat won't even be aware that anything has been added.

How to Get a Cat to Stop Peeing on Furniture

If a cat is peeing on your furniture it can be a very frustrating experience. Most cats are good about using their litter box but some of these animals can get a little more creative at times and choose other areas, including your furniture. For some cat owners this can be enough reason to want to abandon the cat. But in many cases this problem is easy to fix.

One of the most simple solutions is to give the cat more reasons to use the litter box and less to use your furniture. Cats like to be clean, which is one of the reasons they make such good pets. They naturally want to keep their waste material out of their living space. When outdoors, cats usually find places where they can easily dig and use those areas for waste elimination so they can bury it.

Cat

This behavior makes litter training cats easy since it is in line with their natural behavior. If a cat is going somewhere else, the first thing to consider is how inviting the litter box is. If it is not kept maintained and the cat is not supplied with clean places to dig, they may be more likely to avoid the litter box at times.

If the cat still insists on using your furniture, you can try making the furniture less appealing. Using odors that cats do not like, such as white vinegar, can discourage the cat from even getting on the furniture to begin with. You can splash just enough of it on the furniture so the cat can smell it but it won't run you out of the house. If the cat has a certain spot where it likes to pee, you can try putting aluminum foil on the spot. For some reason cats don't like to walk on it.

Use positive reinforcement with a treat when the cat uses the litter box and avoid yelling or trying to punish the cat for misbehaving. Cats do not respond well to punishment and it may only make them fear you. If these tips do not solve the problem, you may want to have your cat checked by a vet to make sure there are not any medical problems.

Iriomote Cat

The beautiful Iriomote Cat resides only on the Iriomote island of Japan, situated nearly two hundred kilometers off the coast of Taiwan. It has lived for millennia on this small island (less than three hundred square kilometers) and has evolved to suit the habitat and environment of this particular place. Owing to similarities in appearance, for some time the Iriomote Cat was considered a subspecie of the Leopard Cat. Recent evidence however indicated that the Iriomote Cat separated from the Leopard Cat in evolution couple of million years ago. A small wild cat, the Iriomote Cat weighs around twelve pounds and is around one a half to two feet long (excluding tail). Males are slightly larger.

Fur is brownish with a number of dark brown spots that coalesce to form stripes which run along the body length. Legs are short in comparison to body size and tail is bushy. Toes are slightly webbed and claws lack a complete sheath, helping the cat in its aquatic pursuits of prey. Ears are short and rounded indicating that the Iriomote Cat primarily uses sight in its movement and hunting.

Cat

A variety of prey is taken by the Iriomote Cat. Its small body size enables it to move quickly through the underbrush and successfully hunt small mammals, birds, insects and fish. It is a solitary and territorial feline that frequently marks its territory (larger in case of males) and is primarily nocturnal, particularly in summer. Mating season is twice an year and pregnancy lasts two months after which a litter of one to four kittens is born.

Prionailurus Iriomotensis, the Iriomote Cat is critically endangered. Less than one hundred remain in the wild. Plus they appear to be breeding with feral cats, leading to dilution of their gene pool. Despite preservation of their territory on the island, the cats frequently stray out of the reserve area and are often hunted by humans.

Ragdoll Cats

Ragdoll cats come in a variety of colors, patterns and size. My ragdoll, Stoli, is what you would call a pointed flame with mitted paws. Let me explain.

Ragdolls have approx. 6 different colors - seal, chocolate, flame, and "dilutes" blue, lilac and cream. Three different patterns are typical with ragdoll cats and kittens: Pointed - which means their nose, ears, tail and paws are in specific colors with no white. Mitted is self explanatory - white paws, chin and tummy, with or without a blaze which is a white line on the face. Bicolor-white tall socks, white inverted 'V' on the face, white tummy and often white patches on the back. Differences include a three-color "tortie-point" mottled seal or blue with red present and lynx - striped pattern on tail, face and points which can be found in all 3 patterns.

Cat

Adult ragdolls can be quite big. They are a large sized cat breed. Males average between 15-20 pounds while Females are smaller and weigh 10-15 pounds on average. Ragdolls are slow maturing breeds, meaning they reach full coat color at around two years of age and full size and weight at four years.

The Ragdoll cat typically has a very gentle and relaxed temperament. When socialized from birth they are attentive and affectionate members of the family that enjoy and seek out human companionship. Ragdoll cats remain playful throughout their lives, adjust well to children and pets and are sometimes called "puppy-cats" because of their propensity to follow their owners from room to room and meet them at the door. Ahhh, the beautiful silky feline has captured a place in my heart forever!

Build A Cat Tree - Spoil Your Cats and Save Your Furniture

Want to spoil your cats but don't have a fortune to spend? Build a cat tree! It's fun, simple and very inexpensive. Best of all, you get a custom cat tree for a fraction of the price.

Before I even brought my new kitten home I knew I wanted a cat tree for him. My friend has a beautiful custom cat tower and her cat just adores it. But when she told me how much she'd spent on it I nearly had a heart attack. There was no way I could afford something like that.

Cat

So I started shopping around. There were some in my local pet store but it was a wobbly, one size- one color fits all affair. Ugly and generic as it was, it still wasn't cheap. Because it was so unsturdy I was worried it wouldn't be safe. So I kept looking.

Online I found some lovely cat trees. They were everything I could have wanted for my baby. They came in a hug variety of sizes, shapes and colors. But the cost was out of this world. The shipping alone on this cat furniture was more than my budget would allow.

Luckily while I was looking online, I came across this site that had a DIY package of 11 cat tree plans. This got me to thinking... Why don't I build a cat tree?

Now this was a little on the wild side for me because I'm not what you would call a handy person. But I do know a hammer from a screw driver and seriously, how hard can it be?

Because they were instantly downloadable I had my cat tree plans in hand within 5 minutes deciding to get them. About 20 minutes after that I knew I'd made the right decision and was sure I could build a cat tree for my new kitten.

The materials list made it easy to get everything I needed from the store. I got it all in one trip, which is something of a miracle for me. The guys at the home center even made some of the big cuts for me so the pieces would fit better into my car. That cut down on the amount of work I had to do as well. I got that tip from the plans or I'd never have known home centers will do that for you... and guess what? It's included in the cost of the materials so it didn't cost any extra!

Now for the big question... How hard is it to build a cat tree?

I'm not gonna lie... It did take me a few days to complete (I work kinda slow) but I was pleasantly surprised by how simple it was to build a cat condo of my very own. I just followed the step by step directions always referring to the photos as I worked. Before I knew it I had a lovely piece of cat furniture and my kitten loves it!

How to Get Rid of Cat Urine Smell

If you have a cat that marks or one that has a few accidents here and there, then you are probably all too familiar with the smell of cat urine that never seems to go away. Yes, cat pee is one of the longest lasting scents in the animal world. It is also one of the hardest to eliminate. But, it can be done!

Vinegar

Cat

White vinegar is a powerful cleansing and deodorizing agent. It works best if applied immediately. As soon as you notice an accident has occurred, wet it with white vinegar and let it sit for a few minutes before wiping away.

If you have tile floors, the vinegar will be able to kill all odor causing bacteria. However, if you have carpet, it gets a bit harder. Every inch that has been affected needs to get treated. If the urine has been given time to work its way into the padding, you would need to wet both the carpet and underlying padding to fully kill the odor.

You may need to do this several times before it is completely gone.

Baking Soda

Place this on soils immediately. It will soak up the urine and eliminate and prevent odors from developing. It works well in the refrigerator and it will do the same on accidents. But, you will need to apply while the soil is still 'fresh.'

Enzymes

Enzymes are the most effective! They are available commercially. Do not buy in bulk however. Because the enzymes are live, they do not live very long on the shelf and even shorter once opened. Buy enough for what you need only. They do not store.

Never Use Ammonia

Excellent at cleaning glass, it is horrible for cleaning pet messes. Instead of helping, it will only make matters worse. It will actually add to the odor problem and will encourage your cat to use the spot again to go pee.

When your cat attacks you!

Are you sick of having your cat bite your feet? Why do they do this and how can it be stopped?

If you are tired of having your cat bite your feet there are simple things you can do to prevent this behavior. But before you change their behavior, you should identify why they are exhibiting this behavior. There are many reasons why a cat might be aggressive towards their owners. The main reasons are due to conditioning, genetics, environment, and medical.

Cat

The primary reason why cats bite their owner's feet is to get their attention. In other words they are conditioned to do this. Their reward for biting their owner's feet is often a reward in the form of food or attention. It takes a while for a cat to become conditioned to this behavior, so it takes time to de-condition them from doing it.

Another reason a cat might be aggressive is due to genetics. A cat's personality is largely determined by its genetics. Studies have shown that cat's personalities are often the same as their parents, and little can be done to prevent them from changing. It has been shown that some cats just don't like to be around people as much no matter how well they are treated.

Environment plays a big role in the behavior of a cat. Cats that live in single cat households are often aggressive towards their owners often times out of boredom. On the other hand cats that are in multi cat households are more stressed out because of the limited resources of litter boxes, food bowls, etc.

Certain medical conditions can also play a role in aggressive behavior. A medical condition called hyperthyroidism can lead to a cat acting hyperactive and aggressive towards its owners. If you suspect your cat has a medical condition you should see a veterinarian.

Just as there are many causes as to why your cat bites your feet, there are many ways to train your cat to behave and stop biting your feet. If you take the time to understand your cat's behavior you can build a great relationship with them.

5 Possible Reasons Why Your Cat is Urinating in the House

Are you sick and tired of your cat urinating in house? Don't get mad at your cat for doing it. He could be ill, in pain, suffering from a urinary blockage, dealing with incontinence due to old age, or simply have behavior problems.

Why is my cat urinating in house? There are many reasons why it happens so you have to know what symptoms and signs to look out for to figure out the cause of the problem. Here are 5 possible reasons.

Cat

1. Behavior problems may be the reason why you see your cat urinating in house. More male cats are territorial and pee in inappropriate areas. Inappropriate urination in cat behavior is also known as spraying, or marking.

Male and female cats urinate on vertical and horizontal surfaces to mark their territory and to communicate their availability to each other with pheromones. Stress and overcrowding of the house may be the underlying cause.

Spraying is more common in households with multiple pets. It can be cured if you neuter your cat early or castrate him since unneutered male cats most commonly spray. Behavior consultation with a professional animal trainer may be necessary as well.

2. Why is my cat urinating in house? A urinary blockage due to the accumulation of crystals and mucous in the urinary tract may be the problem. Often blockages prevent your cat from being able to urinate at all but sometimes the bladder gets so full that the pee leaks around the blockage due to the pressure.

Kidney stones can also cause the same problem. You may notice that the smell of your cat's urine is pretty foul due to an accompanying bacterial infection. In order to help your cat achieve permanent recovery and good health, treat stones by dissolving them with a homeopathic remedy.

3. A disease may be the underlying cause if you notice your cat urinating in house. A tumor, brain and spinal cord diseases, and diabetes are some illnesses that can cause incontinence and frequent urination in cats.

Take your cat in to get a proper veterinary diagnosis. Even if a serious disease is the cause of your cat's urinary problems, give him a homeopathic remedy to help him heal and to strengthen his immune system.

4. Why is my cat urinating in house? Generally when cats urinate outside of their litter boxes, it is because it is painful for them to urinate and they associate that pain with their litter box. A feline urinary tract infection is usually the cause.

If your cat's urine smells foul, there is blood in your cat's urine, you see your cat lick his genitals often, or your cat strains to urinate you can suspect a urinary tract infection. Help your cat heal from the infection by giving him a homeopathic remedy, plenty of water to drink, and a healthy diet full of raw, unprocessed food.

Your veterinarian may try to prescribe medication to treat the infection but an antibiotic can be harsh and often aggravate urinary infections rather than heal them.

5. If you notice your cat urinating in house, it could be due to incontinence from old age. There are medications available to tighten loosened sphincters due to old age but they are not without their harsh side effects.

Eliminating incontinence naturally is possible if you give your cat a homeopathic remedy. Have your cat examined in a veterinary clinic to rule out any diseases that could be causing your cat's incontinence.

Otherwise, make sure your cat follows a strict diet of raw, unprocessed foods and give your cat a homeopathic remedy every day.

Your next step? Take this information and use it as a guide to help you treat your cat's urinary problems. If you notice your cat urinating in house, there could be many underlying causes so it's important to pinpoint the cause with the help of a veterinarian.

5 Possible Reasons Why Your Cat is Urinating in the House

After doing so, help your cat achieve recovery by giving your cat a homeopathic remedy, plenty of fresh water to drink, and a healthy diet. By doing so your cat will be much healthier and happier and you will prevent your house from becoming one giant litter box.

What to Do If Your Cat Goes Missing

It happens to every cat owner at some time or another, your cat goes missing. What do you do? The first important point is not to panic. The obvious place to begin a search is inside your own home. Quite often your cat is not actually missing, it has simply found a warm and secluded hideaway in the home and simply gone to sleep.

The airing cupboard is a favourite place for a cat to sneak into. If your beds have a space underneath then cats will often crawl into this space and curl up. So your first step must be a thorough search inside your home and pay particular attention to any warm spots. When you have done this with no results you should look in any outbuilding such as a shed or garage.

Cat

The next most likely place that your cat will have gone is your neighbours house. Cats are no respecters of property and will consider an open door or cat flap an invitation to enter. You should also ask your neighbours to check their own out buildings. In the majority of cases by now you should have discovered exactly where you cat is hiding.

If these searches have produced no results then it is time to go out into the streets to look for your pet. The best times to do this are early in the morning or late at night. If your cat is outside and possibly lost it will lay low during the day and come out during the hours of darkness.

If the cat has been missing for more than 24 hours you should consider putting up some "missing cat" posters around your area. Ideally these should include a picture of your cat and a brief description. Should your cat be a valuable pedigree animal it is wisest not to mention this on your poster as it could attract "catnappers". It can also be useful to tell the local children that your cat is missing and offer a small reward for anyone who finds it. Children are by nature pet lovers and will see looking for a missing pet very much as a game and search very diligently for you.

It can also be worth contacting your local cat rescue service as many of these operate a lost and found service. The important thing is never to give up; there have been many reported cases of cats returning to their home months and even years after they went missing.

Signs and Symptoms of a Stressed Out Cat

If you are a cat owner, you know that cats are emotional and sensitive creatures. Just like us, they can be lonely, stressed or depressed, but they do not express themselves the way we would.

When your cat sharpens her claws by attacking your sofa that may not seem like normal behavior to you but rest assured, it is perfectly normal. Cats have an innate need to sharpen their claws, even if they have been removed. A cat scratching post is a great way to deter kitty from your furniture. Scratching is also how cats mark their territory or anything they consider their property. If kitty kneads at your leg, consider it a compliment, she is marking you as hers.

Cat

Some signs that your cat may be in actual distress are; overeating, loss of appetite, excessive fearfulness or urinating outside of the cat liter box.

If any of these things are happening, take a look at your environment. Even a recent move can upset your feline friend. I had an incident last winter where my ten-year-old cat urinated outside of the litter box. In fact, he urinated right next to the box. In ten years, he had never urinated outside of the box! My first concern was that he had some sort of a bladder infection.

If a cat is having pain while urinating, he may associate that pain with the litter box and therefore go outside of the box. In order to rule this out, I took him to my vet immediately. (Actually, he went outside of the box one more time before I took him in). Thankfully, the vet found nothing wrong with him. She asked me if I had made any changes around my home or had any over-night visitors. I had not had any visitors, nor could I think of any recent changes. Then, it dawned on me...I made a cute Christmas bandana for him and placed it around his neck. Could he be so neurotic that this bandana upset him enough to urinate outside of his litter box?? Only one way to find out, I removed the bandana. Sure enough, after I removed the bandana he never went outside of the box again.

Other common stressors to cats are; any new addition to your family-furry or otherwise, a change in your work schedule, even loud noises such as fireworks. (My cats hate the 4th of July). If your cat is grooming more than usual, hiding more than usual, or attacking for no reason it may be stressed out. Pay attention to your cat, she will often let you know what is bothering her.

Ask your vet for additional advice on keeping your cat stress free.

Causes of Blood in Cat Urine

Some reasons for blood in cat urine can be from the following causes:

o One of the most common reasons for cat urine with blood is a urinary tract infection. This type of infection could be in the bladder, or urethra or kidneys. This requires immediate veterinarian care so the kidneys are not damaged further.

Cat

o Another cause of blood in cat urine could be kidney disease which is serious. Symptoms are similar to urinary tract infections and can vary from and include; increased urination, urinating less than usual, thirst, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures or no appetite.

o Urinary stones sometimes form in the urinary tract which can scrape the urethra causing blood in cat urine. Causes of stones can be mineral crystals in the urine, bacteria, diseases, some medications, pH imbalance of urine.

o Has your cat eaten something harmful such as poison? Rat or mouse poison causes internal bleeding and dehydration which can cause cat urine with blood.

o Blood in cat urine needs to be differentiated from blood in urine due to a female cat in estrus stage. When the cat comes into heat the urine may become reddish and resemble blood mixed with urine. This is normal and nothing to be concerned with.

The urinary tract is an amazing system which removes waste, controls fluid and mineral levels. To keep your cat in good shape, once they no longer have symptoms, start a routine of alternative supplements which can help support your cat's urinary tract so it stays on balance making them less prone to infections.

How Do I Stop My Cat From Howling?

Cats are generally attention seeking animals. They get bored too soon and to catch your attention they might howl so that you look at them, pet them, feed them or just shower them with love. Cats are the most affectionate pets but they are emotionally demanding too - if your cat howls, try not to give her too much attention right away otherwise the howling will get reinforced as he/she will get the response he/she was looking for. The trick is to give her some attention before she starts noise making. You can play with her, stroke her or even talk to her and she'll get satisfied that you acknowledged her presence.

There could be reasons other than attention because of which your cat might be howling. If your cat is not a habitual howler and she suddenly starts doing so - there could be something wrong with her, medically. Take her to the vet and get a full check up done. As your cat grows older, her hearing may get impaired with time and she will not be able to realize how loud her howling is. She could also be experiencing pains from age related issues. In such cases, take her to a vet immediately.

Cat

Cats love taking excessive naps during the day and tend to be more active at night. The easiest thing that you can do to make the howling stop is to play with her during the day, try to cut down some of her naps so that she feels sleepier at night. In other cases, when your cat is howling really loud, don't give her the attention that she wants and walk out of the room. Give attention to your cat when she is not howling for it - try to have a play time with her before you go to bed.

The Pros And Cons Of Flushable Cat Litter

If you have cats, no doubt you know that keeping the litter box clean is one of the biggest chores you face. And the odor can be a constant problem no matter what you do. To this end, marketers have tried to come up with ways that will make this chore easier. One of these ways is using flushable cat litter.

Flushable litter can be convenient for owners because instead of having to dispose of clumping or other types of litter in waste receptacles, you can simply flush it down the toilet and get rid of smell and mess in one instant. And indeed, this can be a great convenience for many cat owners.

Cat

These litters are often also lighter in texture. Typically, the cost is roughly the same as other types of litters in cost per use. They may appear more expensive because of their lighter weight (for example, if regular clumping clay costs 20 cents a pound and the flushing type costs three times that, this looks more expensive, but you should remember that it will weigh less per use and thus can go farther). They can be hard to find as well, but availability of Internet shopping makes this a relatively minor problem, since owners can have it shipped to them if it is not available in their area.

However, you should know that this has its drawbacks as well. One of these is that you exchange contributing to landfill waste with used litter, for water waste and extra sewage. Therefore, it may not be any more environmentally sound than simply disposing of used litter in the trash. Its advantage is that because the soiled mess is flushed instantly, there is usually much less lingering box odor. In addition, some types of litter can be composted once dried stools are removed. This may be the way to have the least environmental impact from your cat's box.

One other consideration with using flushing versus conventional litter is your cat's "opinion" of the litter itself. Many cats are so used to the regular texture and feel of clay that they will not use the flushing type. In this case, of course, the most important consideration is whether or not your cat will use the box at all. You should keep careful watch to see if you cat does or does not like the flushable litter.

You may be able to get him or her to use it if you began by mixing a small amount of the flushing litter in with your cat's regular litter (without flushing this at first, of course, but disposing in the trash as usual) and gradually increasing the amount of flushable litter and decreasing the amount of the clay until you're using 100% flushable. Even with this type of "break-in" period, some cats never get used to the flushing type and will only stay with tried-and-true clumping variety. However, if your cat does like it, it may be a viable alternative for you.

In short, if you have a cat, your litter box use is going to have at least some environmental impact that will be detrimental. However, flushable cat litter can give you a much "cleaner" way to manage waste than other traditional types. Because they can be flushed and do not have to be thrown away in the trash, it generally makes for much less smell and mess than traditional clays do. The choice is yours, and as always, you should make the best one possible for your lifestyle and preferences. Just remember your cat will likely have the final say.
