Holistic Cat Food Vs Grocery Store Brands

Don't confuse Holistic with Organic. There is a distinction. Holistic means management of foods in an ecological manner above and beyond going back to simpler, more natural methodology. Organically managed food basically means the land and resources are used in a more natural manner (grain fed, no additives or pesticides etc). One might say Holistic is a way of life, while organic is just a better diet. Either is much better than the typical grocery store brands (like Iams which also makes Eukaneuba, or Friskies and Whiskas).

When you put the word Organic on human food, you can pretty much guarantee double the price. Of course things will vary for different countries. The same can apply to holistic pet foods. Some are quite expensive, but when you read further you may see why I personally feel that anything holistic rather than a grocery store brand is better. You do get what you pay for after all.

Cat

Sure, some kitties will not eat anything BUT those low grade grocery store foods full of fillers. I have heard the argument that "My mom's cat ate BrandX cat food for years and never had problems" many, many times. Usually about animals that have long since passed on. Think on it though, 10-20 years ago we did not have nearly as much toxin in our food, water and even the very air we breathe. Today, however, our bodies are being bombarded with so innumerable things that break down and try to destroy our natural immune systems. It becomes increasingly important that we ensure that the food that sustains us is as good as it can be. AND be free of pesticides, additives and preservatives and all the other toxic man-made things that we really don't even need. The same applies to our pets. That pet food so and so's mom's cat ate 10-20 years ago was fed to a cat that was intrinsically healthier because it lived in a healthier atmosphere to begin with.

Our pets can't speak for themselves. And certainly, as you may know, the pet food industry sure hasn't been speaking for our pets either. The pet food industry has been feeding (no pun intended) crap to our pets, to the media and therefor to us, the consumers, for decades! Pet food is not nearly as regulated as human food. Until last year, specifically with the pet food scare we had in 2007. The media put a huge spotlight on the pet food industry because of the pet food recalls last year.

It's about time the pet food manufacturers were held accountable for the quality of their food and how it is produced! But did YOU know what is really in pet food?

Let me introduce you to some of the holistic cat foods my cats have tried. Merrick's, Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul, Natural Balance and Nutro. We now feed Wellness Core exclusively because of its quality at a reasonable price and, quite frankly, its availability at our local pet store.

You surely recognize some of these brands. Next time you are at the pet store, compare any of the holistic pet foods to Whiskas or Iams, or even Royal Canin and Science Diet. What you are looking for is an absence of by-products and any type of wheat, corn or corn meal. Cats are obligate (true) carnivores, yet many commercial pet foods are composed primarily of low-cost grains. These grains are fillers and are not necessary to the diet of your cat at all. If you see corn or wheat or corn meal in the first 5 ingredients, find another cat food. It's no different than feeding your cat cereal.

*Note that even some of the prescription grade Science Diet has by-product in it!

Meat and poultry by-products are the unrendered parts of the animal left over after slaughter; everything deemed unfit for human consumption. In cattle and sheep, this includes the brain, liver, kidneys, spleen, lungs, blood, bones, fatty tissue, stomachs and intestines. The items on this list that would normally be consumed by humans, such as the liver, would have to be diseased or contaminated before they could be designated for pet food. Poultry by-products include heads, feet, intestines, undeveloped eggs, chicken feathers and egg shells.

Why then, one may wonder, will pets even eat such food? After that slurry pot of "meat" is processed, it is bound with wheat or grains. Then it is basted in fat. The pet smells this glorious kibble basted in fat. No wonder he/she will eat it.

The number one reason why I will always feed holistic is because the cats absorb MORE of the good stuff that is in the food. They have improved skin and coat, increased vitality and increased energy, and they pass less stool - much less stinky stool at that!

An even more interesting and 'pure' holistic food the cats have tried and liked is Wysong. Wsyong's processing methods are what really interested me though.

Since about 1979. Dr. Wysong began with clinical and surgical inventions, and branched into the various facets you see today as his research demonstrated the problems in conventional medicine and the importance of prevention. One of his company's beliefs is that usual pet food processing (intense heat to cook and preserve) destroys way too much of the essential nutrition required for balanced, healthy diets. Wysong's processing and storage methods alone make them a leader in excellent quality holistic pet food products. Definitely worth reading their numerous articles and documentation on their pet food products.

Now I'm not saying that Science Diet or Royal Canin are not good products. They are simply NOT holistic brands. They are mid-grade quality cat foods while Whiskas and Friskies would be considered low grade quality.

One product I always recommend for people wanting to feed their pets better, but who may not be able to afford the high end holistic grade pet food, is by Nutro. Nutro has two levels of very decent cat food. One is more grocery store priced (but not grocery store level), and the other is a bit better, but again not overly expensive. Try Nutro's Maxx Cat or their higher end brand, Natural Choice. While not considered Holistic, these brands have NO by-product and very little grain. Nutro has some excellent dog food as well as a holistic brand.

There is one Canadian made holistic pet food that I am aware of. Orijen is made in Alberta with Canadian grown meat and fish, grains and produce. If Orijen was sold at my local Pet Valu, I'd be buying it!

Learning to read cat food labels can be difficult. But with a little effort, you can learn to feed your beloved cats the healthiest choices available. Your cats will thank you! And so will your pocketbook.

How are you gong to make it stable? No crashing kitties please. How are you going to make it all fit together? With all these ideas running around in your head you need to pull out pencil and paper and sketch out what you want. There are also a lot of plans available online if you don't want to reinvent the cat tree.

A lot of these plans will give you a head start on the nitty gritty parts of how to build a cat tree so you wont need to start from scratch and learn how to keep the carpet attached to the cat tree the hard way!

The Egyptian Mau - Small Cat With a Big History

If there is any sort of valid claim to being the cat of ancient Egypt and the Pharaohs it must go to the Mau. After all, the word "mau" means cat. What better credentials could a fantastic feline have?

Well, what if the particular breed of cat can be clearly seen in ancient Egyptian artwork? Even better, what if Hollywood itself has given its stamp of authenticity to the breed? In the 2004 movie, "Catwoman", Halle Berry's character, Patience Phillips, is killed, but is brought back to life by a Mau named "Midnight", which was actually played by three different cats. It's not surprising that they turned out to be movie stars, however, because they are known for not only their striking appearance, but for their personality and charisma as well.

Cat

When you go as far back into history as the Egyptian Mau, you are bound to come in contact with some wilder, less refined ancestors. The Mau is directly descended from wild African spotted cats. These ancestors were domesticated, by the ancient Egyptians and may be, as some believe, the starting point for all modern breeds of domesticated felines, from the pretty Persian kitty to those backyard balladeers...the alley cats.

Though many years removed from its ancestral strain, the Mau has retained the spots which are one of its trademarks. In fact the spots are even more a part of the Mau than just a hair color. Its skin is actually spotted as well! Another note on spots is that this cat breed is the only naturally spotted breed. All other known spotted cats have been bred to produce the spots in their fur.

The Mau is a smallish cat, only weighing in the vicinity of five to about eleven pounds. However, don't let its size fool you. It still has the graceful hunter's moves of its wild ancestors. It is also one of the fastest breeds of domesticated cats, and a natural design in the skin which allows its long hind legs to take longer strides than other cats is the same feature found in another cat relative...the cheetah. This small pet cat has been clocked at 30 MPH! Even with its small size, however, the Mau possesses a working cat's muscles in an overall sleek package that is topped, or bottomed, off by a graceful tail which may be as much as two thirds of its total length.

A feature that particularly endears this breed to me is that it tends to chuckle or chortle when happy, rather than mewling. It also becomes quite animated when happy and expresses its pleasure with rapid tail movements and kneading with the feet while chuckling to itself.

The Mau is a great family cat. It is friendly but protective, and is devoted to its family. A possible drawback here is that they tend to like a lot of one-on-one companionship and plenty of play. In the absence of a stay-at-home human, they are graciously willing to play instead with other cat friends. So, if you cannot be at home as often as your Mau would like, you may have to get him or her a pet!

Living with the Mau is the least of your problems, however. A Mau does not come cheap, with one site I visited quoting a starting price of 0, and it goes up from there, of course. The other issue is the scarcity of the breed. They are a popular breed with a limited supply, so you may be on a waiting list for some time.

While any old Mau may come in several shades and variations of colors, the Cat Fanciers' Association recognizes three acceptable colors for show - silver, bronze, and smoke. Cats of other colors, such as black, blue-silver, blue spotted, blue smoke, and solid blue, are still one hundred percent Mau, although they are not recognized for show.

If you want a cheerful, playful family cat that can give you a taste of history, and a touch of the wild, you might just be looking for an Egyptian Mau.

Cat Behavior Problems - Scratching Furniture

Understanding more about your cat's basic nature will often help you solve cat behavior problems. Domestic cats are descendants of wild relatives and therefore many instinctive traits carry over as part of their nature. This can become quite frustrating when you are trying to raise a well-behaved domestic cat!

Consider that cats are hunters by nature. In the wild, most of the smaller cat species subside on hunting small rodents. They are typically solitary, nocturnal animals that catch their own food to feed only themselves. Therefore, stalking and pouncing on small prey is a common behavior of cats in the wild.

Cat

Stalking and pouncing on your furniture is one of the many downsides of a domestic cats natural behavior! Your cat may be sharpening his claws, "hunting" a small thread, or marking his territory on your sofa. To solve this behavior problem, you can start by providing your cat with a designated scratch post.

Often times your cat will still prefer to use the sofa instead of the scratch post. There are many things you should try in order to direct your cat's predatory behavior away from your furniture. First, try using a towel or blanket to cover the piece of furniture they are attacking. If they are still going after your furniture, make a loud noise by shaking an aluminum can full of coins.

You can also try putting your cat in an area of the house where there is no furniture that they like to scratch. Put your scratch post in this area where it can be the only choice for scratching. Keep this up for several days if necessary. When it's time for your cat to come back to the rest of the house, put the scratch post near or in front of the piece of furniture that he scratches.

From time to time, your cat will likely revert back to scratching your piece of furniture. You will want to continue disciplining your cat with the noisy aluminum can or one of several other methods. Air Cans and water bottles can be used to create a condition your cat will want to avoid. Air cans make a disturbing noise, and cats hate to be sprayed by water. To be effective, you need to catch your cat in the act of scratching.

When your cat uses the scratch post, offer them rewards such as praise, treats, or brushing. When your cat uses the furniture, use your disciplinary methods. Positive and negative reinforcement are a major key to changing problem cat behavior. You must however, use behavior reinforcement by catching your cat in the act.

Remember that many cat behavior problems are the result of a cat's instinctive nature. Although you can't change a cat's nature, you can often change their behavior problems. If you implement the correct strategies, your wild cat will be well on the way to becoming a model catizen!

Learning to Speak "Cat"

English (or any other human language) is not spoken by cats. They do, however, speak to you in many other ways. Cats solve problems like any other cognitive animal. Communication happens when you allow your cat to express herself, and talk back to her making the effort to understand. Your effort will improve your bond and make for a happier cat. It also trains you to read your cat's language better--knowing when she wants to play or be left alone.

The tail is important to cat communication (just like we use our hands to accentuate what we say verbally), Your cat's tail straight up and quivering is a greeting from your loving friend. When her tail is swishing side to side, your cat is about to attack, it may be in play or during fights. If you have ever seen your cat raise the ruff on her back and puff out her tail, there is no question she is scared, angered and ready to attack (the bristling makes her look larger and more aggressive).

Cat

Your cat's ears also speak to you. Her ears pointing forward and outward slightly indicate she is a relaxed, happy cat. Ears twitching indicate agitation and nervousness. If her ears are back between alert and defensive positions, your cat is ready to attack. Flat against her head her ears show fright and her willingness to fight.

Your cat purrs, gurgles, meows, and peeps in varying tones it can mean almost anything. The more time you spend talking to your cat, the greater will become your understanding of her language. Listening carefully, and making an effort to learn her "language" will enrich your bond and may encourage her to become more expressive.

Whatever causes purring (and scientists aren't certain what it is), it is a sign of happiness and contentment. And there is probably no more calming sound in all creation. Inexplicably some cats only purr when they are ill--maybe they are yearning for that calm and happiness. Growling or hissing indicates your cat means business (I hear this with Sarah at every vet's appointment), and you had better not push your point or you will be attacked.

Using her claws to knead your leg when she jumps onto your lap is not done just to annoy you. Kittens knead their mother's belly to stimulate milk excretion. Kneading your leg or shoulder is a sign of love for the mother-figure you represent, and she may be having memories of feelings of satisfaction she felt when Mother fed her. Learn the special way of "listening" and you will hear your cat's communication clearly.

My Cat Has Fleas - How Can I Get Rid of Them Naturally?

If your cat has fleas and you're looking for ways to get rid of them naturally, without the use of the common and highly toxic chemical pesticides, then I applaud you. The very common cat flea (and dog) preparations, often promoted by personable and popular veterinarians, does a huge amount of harm to your cat.

All chemical flea preparations are toxic by their very nature. They may well kill the fleas, but they will also be slowly killing your cat.

Cat

All the common and popular chemical pet flea preparations contain nerve damaging agents. You can easily check this for yourself. All you have to do is to search the internet for each of the ingredients. But you've probably already done this, which is why you're on a new journey, one to find a natural cat flea preparation.

Natural treatments of any condition tends to look for the cause. In addressing the cause, the effect, the fleas, disappear on their own.

So what is the cause of cat fleas? Isn't it normal and natural for a cat to have fleas? The fact is, it isn't. Can you imagine what the results of a hunt would be, if a wild cat was periodically overcome by an irresistible urge to scratch? They would have died out thousands of years ago from starvation.

So if a wild cat doesn't have fleas, why do domestic cats?

The answer comes in two parts.

Most of the common commercial cat foods are nutrient poor and upset your cat's natural pH balance. A cat is a true carnivore and needs to have an acidic pH. A poor diet will alter this. And fleas love any alteration in the norm. Now your cat's skin provides an ideal breeding and feeding ground for them to thrive.

By changing your cat's diet to be more in line with that of a wild cat, you immediately change the pH to a healthy level, which is unattractive to fleas.

Learn to listen to your cat - through the symptoms that develop - rather than the pretty pictures and convincing advertising. Your cat also knows far more about good, natural health than do most veterinarians.

The other part that is supportive to your cat having fleas is the health care you provide. Medication and vaccines suppress your cat's immune system making them more susceptible to ongoing health problems. Fleas love this and thrive in these conditions.

By changing your cat's primary health care over to a natural one, such as homeopathy, you will ensure her problems are dealt with by supporting her immune system, rather than suppressing it.

Getting rid of fleas is simple, when you know the cause.

Thyroid Disease and Anal Glands in Cats - What You Should Know About it

Hyperthyroidism, the overproduction of thyroid hormone, is not uncommon in feline seniors. It is, in fact, the most common endocrine problems in cats. Environmental, nutritional, and immunological factors are all thought to contribute to the development of tumors that stimulate the thyroid glands to secrete too much thyroid hormone.

Although the symptoms of hyperthyroidism vary from one cat to another, some are common. The majority of hyperthyroid cats lose weight despite increased appetites, and many exhibit heart murmurs or elevated heart rates.

Cat

Other common symptoms include vomiting, excessive thirst and urination which also may indicate diabetes, and increased activity. Initial diagnosis can be complicated, though, because some cats have less appetite and become less active as they age.

In some cases, an affected cat may experience diarrhea or respiratory problems. Blood tests that assess hormone levels are necessary to accurately diagnose hyperthyroidism. Once diagnosed, the disease usually can be controlled with drugs, radioiodine therapy, or surgery.

Like most predators, your cat has anal glands or anal sacs embedded in her anal sphincter muscle. When the animal defecates, or become alarmed or excited, the glands excrete a pungent fluid that identifies the individual animal.

It is, in fact, the presence of that fluid that makes an animal's feces so interesting to other animals. Healthy anal glands are expressed, or emptied, every time your cat has a bowel movement. Anal glands can, however, retain fluid is they become impacted or blocked, infected, or injured, which can cause your cat discomfort, pain, and in some cases, more serious complications.

If you notice your cat licking or biting excessively at her anal area or scooting her fanny across the floor, or if she develops a foul odor, she needs veterinary attention. Treatment usually involves manually expressing the glands, a simple procedure. In chronic cases, the glands can be removed.

CatGenie 120 Review: Is It Right for You and Your Cat?

If you have a cat and you don't have a lot of time or if you don't like dealing with a smelly, dirty litter box your alternative is to invest in an automated self-cleaning cat box. Among the many boxes on the market the CatGenie 120 as a totally different animal compared to the rest.

The CatGenie 120 is a litter less litter box. Instead of litter it uses permanent washable granules that are disinfected with a SaniSolution similar to what veterinarians' use to clean their examination tables in their animal hospitals. The SaniSolution is held in a cartridge that dispense the solution during the cleaning cycle and each cartridge is good for up to 120 cleanings. You just need to replace the cartridge every few weeks.

Cat

The CatGenie is shaped like a toilet with a bowl that contains the permanent washable granules. These washable granules are there to accommodate a cats need for digging when preparing to do their business. After a cat has completed their activity a sensor on the unit recognizes that the cat is no longer in the bowl and begins the cleaning cycle. There is a safety mechanism that stops the cleaning cycle should the cat reenter the bowl.

You have to attach the unit up to a water supply. The unit comes with a "T" shaped connector so you can attach it up to a water supply in your bathroom or laundry room. If you have a ridge waterline you may have to replace it with a flexible line to accommodate the "T" connector. There also needs to be a drain or toilet near by so the waste can be discarded.

You can start the cleaning by pushing a button or you can set it for cat activation You can program the delay timer for when you want the cleaning cycle to start after the cat has left the box. Unlike other cat boxes where the cat urine is absorbed by the litter in the CatGenie the urine flows through the granules and drains out of the bowl into a compartment in the back where it is neutralized by the solution and disposed of in the cleaning cycle. When the cleaning cycle starts cold water mixes with the SaniSolution into the granules while an apparatuses called a GenieHand scrubs and scours the basin removing the solid waste by dumping it into a compartment where it is liquefied and it is disposed of through a drainage hose that you attach to a drain or drains into a near by toilet. A built-in a hot air blower dries the granules so they are ready for the next use.

The motor does make some noise but it depends on ones owns personal noise tolerance level as to whether something is annoying or not. So you should decide before hand where you will be placing the unit. The CatGenie 120 doesn't require a lot of maintenance once it's set up. The company recommends that you use their Machine Maintenance Treatment Packs up to four times a year in order to keep the hoses and the system running clean and free of clogs. The unit comes with one maintenance cartridge additional ones need to be purchased.

You only need to change the SaniSolution cartridges every few weeks depending on how many cats are using the unit. It is recommended that no more than 2 cats use one unit. You may also need to purchase some additional washable granules from time to time to replace the ones that sometimes get thrown out with the solid waste.

Benefits:

The system is totally automated

It is cat activated

No more litter to buy

No cat waste to scoop

Saves time and money

Features it comes with:

1 SaniSolution cartridge

"T" connector

3-ft.GenieHose Place

9-ft. drain hose

Fleas on Cats - Use a Natural Pet Remedy

Would you like to rid your cat of fleas without the use of toxic chemicals and insecticides? Wouldn't you agree that a treatment using natural ingredients, that is effective and poses no risk of side effects to your pet would be better than using toxic chemicals? To learn more about using a natural pet remedy for fleas on cats read on.

Fleas on cats are not a pleasant subject for the pet owner. When your cat comes in the house and brings these blood sucking insects with her you must take some action to control them both on your pet and in your home. Fleas are not the easiest thing to get rid of. To do so requires diligence and persistence.

Cat

Off the shelf cat flea remedies such as powders, sprays, and shampoos are extremely toxic to both you and your pet. And, because in all probability, you will have to repeat using these remedies on a regular basis, you and your pet are continually being exposed to these toxic products.

Flea collars are also used however they come with their own set of potential hazards. Pets wearing these collars around their necks have been known to choke to death when the collar gets caught on some protruding object. The poison in the collars can also be absorbed through the skin causing various side effects. A much safer and eco friendly method of controlling these parasites is the use of natural remedies.

There are many advantages in using a natural treatment. A most significant advantage of using a natural treatment is that your pet is safe from possible harm or side effects that could be induced by the use of toxic chemical solutions. In addition the natural treatment is inexpensive and comprised of ingredients that are generally readily available.

Natural remedies, using ingredients commonly found in the home, have proved to be a very effective treatment. One such remedy is to combine garlic and brewer's yeast with your cat's food. As raw garlic is toxic to cats the garlic must be cooked and mixed together with the brewer's yeast and then placed in your pet's food.

The effect of this treatment is to make your pet's skin and blood unacceptable to the fleas causing them to abandon your pet and not return. Please be aware that it does not require much of this natural remedy to be effective only about a teaspoon's worth mixed with the pet's meal will do the trick.

Another natural method of controlling fleas on cats is to mix apple cider vinegar with their drinking water. Just a small amount added to the water has proved an effective control.

Continued use of these natural treatments will ensure that your pet will remain free of fleas, which obviously is beneficial to both your pet and your home and also ensures that you and your pet are not being exposed to the toxic effects of commercial remedies.

Does Your Cat Have Dandruff? Here's Some Things You Should Know

Have you noticed that your cat seems to be developing a dandruff problem? Believe it or not, cats can be afflicted with dandruff just like people can. It's kind of funny when you think about it, but most of us would rather avoid having cat flakes getting all over the carpet and furniture, especially when we already have to deal with all the hair they shed.

So why does a cat get dandruff? A common reason for this is if your cat is overweight. With all that extra flab getting in the way, poor Snowflake has a tough time cleaning herself everywhere, so the skin becomes dry and dandruff results. Obviously the best way to fix this problem is to put your cat on a diet. Not only will the dandruff problem resolve, but your cat will be healthier and live a longer life as well.

Cat

Of course this weight won't come off immediately, so in the meantime you will have to take care of the dandruff problem another way. There are pet shampoos specifically targeted toward dandruff, so go ahead and pick up one of these at your local pet shop. You always want to make sure to carefully rinse off the shampoo completely, because if any is left on it could irritate your cat's skin. Also, make sure you don't bathe the cat too often because cats skin produces natural oils, and if it's constantly washed away then it could irritate your cat's skin and actually contribute to the dandruff problem.

Tea tree oil is another way to help with dandruff. This is beneficial for a variety of skin conditions other than dandruff, and an added benefit is it will get rid of any itchiness your cat might be having.

How To Potty Train My Cat

When we are considering getting ourselves a cat, the first thing that usually comes to mind is the litter box. As a cat owner, I've often asked myself if there was any way I could easily and quickly train my cat to use the potty. And not just any potty, but the one WE ALL use. Let me narrow down some reasons why we should really get into that cat potty training fever.

Obviously, it's not just about the litter box itself. It's about the money we spend each and every month or so for kitty litter. It's expensive, not to mention repetitive. Let's face it, each and every time our cats hop into that litter box of theirs, it costs us money. You would be surprised to see how quickly the litter supply adds up to your monthly expenses. Not to mention that if we truly love our cats, we want what's best for them and their wellbeing, and the healthier they are the longer they'll be around with us. In other words, you could be spending a LOT of money on litter in the long run. And that's just for one cat!

Cat

If you keep looking at that litter box, you'll notice how messy it can be. Your cat likes to come rushing out of it and drag lots of small pieces of litter between their toes and paws, and considering where it just came from... who knows what else the kitty can spread on your floors and carpets? Do not forget that your furniture takes a toll too. Each time your cat jumps onto any of it, you can clearly see the dusty prints that are left behind. Let's not forget how easily those bits and pieces of litter can end up in your cat's food and water too. Then after the cats start their regular grooming habits, the unwanted bits and pieces begin to find their way into their digestive system.

Another good reason I find that we should train our cats to use the potty [http://www.taylexa.com], is the fact that using any kind of kitty litter has definitely played a major role in creating pollution for today's environment. Thankfully a lot of people have realized how much something simple like coaching your cat to use the toilet definitely helps you to do your part for the environment.

Let's recap, shall we? These are just a few examples to show you that training your cat to use the same toilet you use would permanently:

  • Save you a lot of money. Whether you own one cat, or twelve of them, you're going to want to keep their wellbeing a priority.

  • Bacteria and allergens will be reduced, making it a safer and healthier environment for the whole family.

  • The majority of your cat related odors will be eliminated. You'll even save money on air fresheners and sanitizers! (which also have their own set of negative aspects like cost and environmental hazards.)

  • Your floors, carpets and furniture will be much cleaner in general.

  • Less health related risks overall for your cat.

How To Potty Train My Cat

One day as I was browsing the web trying to find a solution to all of this, I stumbled upon an e-book giving proven step-by-step information on how to train your cat to use the potty. [http://www.taylexa.com]

I personally own many cats, and I speak from experience when I say that this book is worth every penny. It's pretty cheap too, only 29.97$. Take it from me, it'll be one of the best investments you'll ever make regarding your precious furry feline friends.

Aggressive Cat Behavior - My Cat is Attacking Other Animals! What Can I Do?

Does your cat attack your other pets? Does it attack the new cat you brought home? Or does it fight with your pet dog? Animal behaviorists have different names for each of these behaviors. When kitty attacks your pet mouse, or the bird in the garden, it's called predatory aggression. It is just following its natural instinct to hunt for prey. Unfortunately, it is difficult to stop this kind of behavior. The best you can do is put a collar with a bell on your cat. This will keep it from sneaking up on its prey. You should also keep your other smaller pets (like your pet hamster) away from your cat.

Fear aggression is yet another instinctive behavior. How do you recognize when kitty is frightened? It hisses, bares its teeth, and crouches low with its tail and legs tucked under its body. It flattens its ears against the head, the pupils dilate, and the fur stands on end. To the person triggering this reaction, it almost seems as if your cat has doubled in size. Just the same as a puffer fish doubling its size to frighten its enemies away. Push kitty any further and it may attack.

Cat

  • So, what can you do? For a start, you should not try to pet or console your cat when it displays this frightened yet aggressive behavior. Petting your cat in this situation not only could get you hurt, it reinforces in kitty that this behavior is okay. You do not want this to happen. Even though it seems uncaring, it is better to ignore kitty in this mood.
  • Where possible, you want to gradually desensitize kitty towards this trigger. Treat it like a phobia in a human being. Expose kitty to the fear trigger a safe distance away for short periods of time, and reward it with treats when it does not show aggressive behavior. Once it gets used to the trigger at a certain distance, gradually decrease the distance. Eventually, like a human being, your cat will stop being afraid.

The other kind of aggression which causes kitty to attack other animals is called territorial aggression. This mean that kitty will chase or fight with the new cat which you bring home. It is trying to protect its territory. If this happens, you will need to take their introduction to each other slowly.

  • First, you need to confine both of them to their own quarters. Let them hear and smell each other, but do not allow any physical contact.
  • Once they get used to each other like this, switch their quarters. Let kitty investigate the newcomer's smell, and let the newcomer investigate kitty's smell and its new home.
  • After this, place them in the same room, but at opposite ends of the room. Let them eat, in order to condition them to associate food with each other's presence.
  • Slowly bring then closer to each other.
  • Finally, free them from their carriers and feed them, while making sure they cannot attack each other.
  • If they eat their food and remain calm at this stage, then you are successful. Be warned that this could take weeks and even months.

In the end, there is no single way of keeping your cat from attacking another animal. You need to be patient and use a complete process.

Cats - How to Easily Retrain Your Cat to Use the Litter Box Again

Contrary to what you might think, cats can be trained. Well...let me qualify that - only as much they're willing!

Cats want to use the litter box. But as you know, a whole lot of conditions have to be just right for your cat. It's easy to retrain kitty back to good cat litter box habits.

Cat

First off, give him or her a chance. If he or she was suffering from a Feline UTI, once the pain is gone, they'll forget they ever felt it. Once the pain medication has taken hold, and you've made positive diet changes, chances are good your cat will go back to using the box again on their own. Goodbye cat urine odor, cat litter box training is done!

If kitty had a urinary tract infection (UTI), he or she associates the pain of the infection with using his or her box.

But suppose your cat doesn't? You've run through the medication cycle, but they don't seem to "get it," and there's still a problem?

So, what do you do about cat litter box training? Well, kitty stays in one location to learn how to use the box again. Don't worry, it's not for long!

Pick a room that houses one of his or her boxes. Confine him or her to that room with food, water, the box, and some toys.

Keep your cat confined for a few days, and monitor their litter box use. They might "get it" quickly, and your problems will be over.

If your car uses their box while under monitoring and supervision, chances are good they're back in the groove. You'll need to continue confinement as long as your cat is confused about the litter box.

Aggressive Cat Problems - How to Tell If Your Cat is Being Playful Or Dangerously Violent

Is your special friend showing signs of aggressive cat problems but you're not sure if it just being playful or not? Cats are very subtle creatures and can be hard to understand at times. Telling the difference between playful aggression and dangerous violent aggression isn't always easy, especially if such behavior is taking place between two cats in the home.

Playful Aggression - Kitty Just Wants Attention

Cat

This type of aggressive behavior is characterized by pouncing, clawing and even some light biting at times. If this is directed towards you its a safe bet your cat is under-stimulated and wants to play. If this occurs during play, your cat is probably just unaware that being too rough with a human is unacceptable behavior.

If these aggressive cat problems are happening between two cats it can be harder to detect due to the fact that it can lead to a fight if one of the cats just isn't in the mood to play. This is typical between older cats and younger cats/kittens who have more energy and need more attention. Sometimes it can be worth the investment of getting another kitten for your kitten to play with.

Dangerous Violent Aggression - Kitty Is Seriously Upset About Something

These can be some of the most frightening and disturbing aggressive cat problems. If your cat is hissing and growling then it's not mere playful aggression, something has set kitty off and he is ready to lash out, if he hasn't already. This could be caused by a wide range of things including fear, social aggression, a territorial dispute with another cat, or in a worst case scenario a serious health problem.

It could also be a case of redirected aggression in which your cat is taking out his angst over another situation on you and the other cats in the home. A new cat coming into the neighborhood or an on-going feud with another cat in the house could set off aggressive cat problems of this nature.

Is There A Way To Stop Aggressive Cat Problems?

Yes, very rarely is there a situation where a cat's aggressive behavior can't be fixed. The key is understanding and pinpointing the source of your cat's problem. Once that is discovered eliminating this bad behavior is quite simple. However, cats can be extremely hard to understand sometimes due to their subtle nature. Also some cats don't communicate as well as others.

Cat Food Facts You Should Be Aware Of

There are many competing cat food products on the supermarket shelf vying for your attention and asking you to buy them. I'm sure you know what I mean, they have their full color pictures of happy looking satisfied cats that are in peak health condition because they eat the XYZ brand of cat food. But are you getting the best cat food for your pet?

What none of those pretty packets tell you is that cats are obligate carnivores, which means they must have the nutrients that are found in animal protein just to survive. By protein I mean meat, chicken and fish. The flesh of these meats, not the by-products. In the wild cats eat the meat of their prey, just as they do when they find a mouse around the house.

Cat

Good quality cat food should list the actual meat such as beef, lamb, tuna, turkey, salmon, chicken etc that is in the tin or packet you buy. Chicken meal is actually considered to be the single best source of protein in commercial pet foods. If you only see the words 'meat and/or meat bonemeal' on the packet, be aware that this can legally include animals that are roadkill, have been euthanized by vets and ground and rendered in factories. Some rendering factories also use diseased, dying and decayed animals to supply to pet food companies.

Dry Cat Food

Cats don't have the teeth to properly chew their food like we do. Their teeth are designed to bite and swallow so a diet of dry biscuits is going to be a problem for them. Not only can they not chew the biscuits, their bodies lack specific enzymes for carbohydrate digestion and metabolism. Cats lack a salivary enzyme called amylase which is used to digest carbohydrates. And almost all cat food biscuits are primarily carbohydrates. Cats can utilize the carbohydrates but their body and digestive tract is suited for protein and fat.

Cats who are fed dog, rabbit or other types of food are at high risk for blindness and heart disease due to insufficient amounts of taurine in their diet. Taurine is a very important amino acid and will be found in commercial cat foods. Other diseases such as obesity, food allergies, diabetes, and heart disease are just some of the many diet related diseases that appear to becoming an epidemic in our cats all over the world due to poor nutrition.

Are You Saving Money By Feeding Cheap Food?

If you are feeding your cat on a cheap food with low quality ingredients, it will need more of this food to get the nutrients required. As a result, you will end up buying more food, which will either end up costing you the same amount as better quality food, or in many cases, more than if you were feeding your cat a diet with healthy, high quality ingredients.

Another thought to keep in mind is that a cat who eats more food will produce more waste, which means more work for you to clean the litter tray and therefore more money spent on cat litter.

A cheaper but less healthy diet can also contribute to serious health problems that will end up costing you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in veterinary bills and prescription drugs for your cat.

Remember your cat is a part of your family and is dependent on you for its life. Investing in the best quality cat food you can afford is a better alternative than the heartache and shortened life span that comes with taking shortcuts or buying inferior food. A cat is for life and the joy and love it brings to you and your family cannot be underestimated.

How CAT Helps Modify Aggression In Dogs

In general, there are three root causes for aggressive behavior in dogs. First, is trauma. That includes: abuse, neglect, agitation and fear.

The second is careless breeding. It is a known fact, aggression breeds aggression. That is why we always tell people who are purchasing a new puppy, to insist on meeting the parents. If the breeder does not want you to meet the parents, run! don't walk back to your car! That is a serious red flag, for the possibility of being trapped with an aggressive puppy.

Cat

Since 1959, at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Russian Academy of Science, in Novosbirsk, Russia, tests have been done with foxes. They found within 50 years and 40 generation of selective breeding of calm to calm, the fear and aggression has been bred out of the initial base of aggressive foxes. They have evolved into foxes with a domesticated dog's juvenile like behaviors. Those behaviors include: submission, barking, whining and the desire for human companionship. They also noted a change in the physiology of the animals, such as coat colors and texture changes, broader heads, floppy ears, and changes in the shapes of tails. These dog-like human friendly foxes are now being sold worldwide, as domesticated pets.

On the flip side, during those same 50 years, aggressive to aggressive breeding has created foxes that are extremely aggressive and vicious.

The third cause is lack of socialization. It cannot be stressed enough, how vitally important it is to socialize a puppy as much and as soon as possible. Fear is a huge factor in aggression. The first 20 weeks of a puppy's life is when they should be exposed to as many new and mostly positive experiences as possible, to help them become less fearful. These experiences must include meeting and being handled by new people. Meeting and interacting with other animals is absolutely necessary. Exposure to new, loud, and strange noises should also be on your to-do-list. Atypical adventures to such places as the children's ballgames and flea markets help a puppy learn how to cope with new situations. And lots of short, fun car rides will help your puppy learn to enjoy traveling. This is the period when they will develop the coping skills they will need, to become well-adjusted, non-aggressive adult dogs.

The CAT Method

There are a number of methods used to modify aggressive behavior in dogs. They all work toward objective of desensitizing the subject animal to the stimuli that pumps all that adrenaline, that makes them fearful, angry and out of control! Constructional Aggression Treatment or CAT, is usually quite successful in modifying inappropriate behaviors.

It is a combination of socialization and behavior modification. By removing the subject dog from their comfort zone, which in most cases is isolation with only their family or their home, they as a rule slowly associate being alone is not necessarily that much fun.
Being pack animals once the inappropriate behavior is modified, most inherently seek the security of a pack.

With CAT, the subject dog learns if and when they show aggression, the object of their focus, be it another dog or person remains in their company. When their behavior transforms to calm, appropriate behavior, the object of their focus is removed.

For this example, we will use dogs. However, if the subject dog's aggressive focus is on people, we switch to people instead of other dogs. By following the same simple formula, which is, "Act inappropriately and your dilemma stays in your face. Calm down, and it leaves," you will reinforce the perception that calm, not crazy gets them what they want.

Dog Aggression

We have worked with a number of aggressive dogs, by initially barricading them in the office, away from the other dogs in the pack, separated by only a sliding glass door. This allows them to see how much fun the others are having together.

The water bucket is in the kitchen, so when the pack wants to drink, they come near the sliding glass door. They drink and then walk away. If the subject dog shows inappropriate behavior while the other dog is drinking, then an immediate, firm correction is made, simply by telling them "NO! BAD!

The objective is to have them remain calm, and eventually, the other dog walks away. We emphasize approval of appropriate behavior by praising the subject dog with a simple "Good boy or good girl." The fact the "threat" walked away when they were calm reinforces to the subject dog, the association "I remained calm, they went away."

As we see appropriate behavior changes starting, we then crate the subject dog, and allow all the other dogs in the pack into the office to hang out while we have our morning coffee. This brings everyone up close and personal. When the crated, subject dog sees that the pack is totally ignoring his or her drama, it takes the wind out of their sails, and they will calm down. That's when the pack leaves them, and usually goes outside to play.

We then remove the subject dog from the crate. He or she remains in the office, where they can watch through another set of sliding glass doors, the other dogs having fun together.

When we deem the subject dog is ready and wants to join the pack, we release him or her, outside with dogs that are most calm, well-adjusted and can deal with the new-comer's theatrics. It is only a matter of minutes, before the subject dog realizes they are not scaring off the others, they are not being attacked, and they will relax. Thus far, we've had excellent results from the CAT method of behavior modification.

Finally, we "road test" the subject dog in the real world. They are taken off the premise, which has now become their new comfort zone, and we test them in public. They are leashed and walked where there are other dogs and/or people. If they react inappropriately, the focus of their issue remains. If they when they become calm, the person or dog leaves.

When we are comfortable with the subject dog's behavior, the final test is the dog park. There we have people and dogs, their ultimate nightmare! With each case we have worked with, the subject dog's behavior has been modify enough, where they've had a wonderful time romping with the other dogs in the park, and meeting and greeting new people.

Bottom line: How quickly the CAT method works depends on you and your dog. This isn't TV, where the problem is solved in less than an hour. Be fair, firm, consistent and patient. Behavior modification takes time, but it's worth the effort. If you aren't willing to make the commitment, find a reputable local trainer, who will do the hard part for you. Then, it's up to you, to keep the training going. Dog training doesn't stop at the end of a class. Your dog's training is a work-in-progress, 24/7, for as long as you have each other.

Four Tips for Reducing Cat Stress and Anxiety

Do you know kitties experience emotional stress, the same as people can? Too much emotional stress can be a hassle for the cat in several ways. Symptoms of stress and anxiety in cats can include being over-excited or over-tired, pulling out hair, changes in eating patterns, peeing or defecating out of the litter box, loud meowing, and others.

The good thing is you can do a number of simple things to reduce the stress your cat endures. That will help to make both of you feel much better. Here are several tricks for eliminating stress in your cats.

Cat

Tip 1: Take good care of the basics

The easiest thing that you can do to reduce your cat's stress would be to make sure the essentials are taken care of. It may seem easy, but making sure the cat has sufficient water and food plus a fresh litter box will go a good way.

There are many feeding tactics you may use, and you might need to experiment to find out what works well with your cat. If your cat eats daily, consider splitting the meal to a morning and a dinner meal. Or, you might try feeding daily, but change to the evening hours instead of the morning hours (or vice versa). For a lot of kitties, a night time feeding may help calm them before you head to sleep, so this can have an additional advantage to you too. One particular technique to stay away from would be to constantly feed your cats - leaving a bowl out all day is not good for your cats because they will frequently eat way too much and become obese.

The litter box location and litter choice is also something to think about. Usually, you will need a minimum of one litter box for each cat. In case you have more than one floor in your house, think about placing a cat litter box on each story, with no less than one per cat. Ensure that you choose a basic cat litter box free of gizmos like entrance doors or sweeping mechanisms that could scare your cat, and make sure that you scoop it daily. Additionally, consider using an all natural cat litter to help encourage your kitty to use the litter box, and help to keep her healthy as well.

Tip 2: Never forget play time

All cats - including mature kitties - enjoy a chance to play. Taking 15 minutes out of your day to amuse your cats will do wonders to help you decrease their stress. Playtime energizes your pet's brain and offers them exercise that they normally would not get.

There are numerous cat toys on the market to select from, and you really should have a wide variety. Laser pointing devices are a fantastic, affordable toy that almost all cats enjoy, although you need to be mindful not to point the beam at your pet's eyes. Many kitties love catnip products, in particular catnip stuffed mouse toys. Some indoor-only cats will even handle mouse toys just like a real mouse, delivering you a "gift"!

You may also create handmade cat toys from things in your home and found objects. Kitties really like old cardboard containers, so when you find a box your kitty might possibly fit in, provide it to her to have fun with. Tying a piece of string around a stick is yet another good idea. Should you be handy and have the supplies, you can create your cats a scratching post or kitty house too using some lumber and old carpet.

Tip 3: Be sure your kitty has company

Despite the fact that kitties can look like loners, a lot of them like company, particularly when that company is human company. Kitties whose owners aren't home often are often stressed out from simply being by themselves all day. If you only have one cat and are also gone frequently, consider getting a second cat (or even a puppy!) to help keep each other company. Clearly the kitties need to get along and that might take time for that to happen, but spending the time and effort to adopt your cat a feline buddy is definitely worth it.

In the event you travel for a living, you're probably accustomed to either leaving extra food and water out for your cats, or having them boarded should you be gone for a longer period. Alternatively, consider a cat sitter. Cat sitters are often inexpensive and always come to your house to give food to and spend playtime with your cats while you are gone. You don't need to concern yourself with driving the cats to the boarding facility, plus your kitties are usually much less anxious.

Tip 4: Consider using a pheromone diffuser

If you have tried the other ideas and your cats still continue to have stress and anxiety problems, consider a pheromone diffuser. Pheromone diffusers plug to a wall outlet and emit an all natural scent that relaxes your cats. You won't have the ability to detect the pheromone, but your kitties will really feel more comfortable. If you choose to try a diffuser, ensure that you read the instructions and buy enough diffusers to cover the locations that your cats devote most of their time. These devices really can make a difference for over-stressed kitties.
